Latino Initiative: Valeria

Supporting Families, Saving Lives

Rompiendo Estigmas Brings Solutions, Helping a Family Thrive

United Way’s Latino Initiative, launched in 2016, fosters inclusion, builds relationships, and embraces and energizes Hispanic or Latino individuals and families who may be at-risk or marginalized.

One of the Latino Initiative’s key events is its annual Rompiendo Estigmas (Breaking the Stigmas) conference. Valeria attended one of Rompiendo Estigmas’ workshops — and what she learned changed her life.

“United Way, specifically its Latino Initiative, has very, very deep significance for me. A few years ago, my son had been struggling with his mental health, and my major fear was my son would kill himself,” says Valeria.

“By attending Rompiendo Estigmas, I discovered so much support and information which ultimately saved my son’s life, and now he is thriving in college. Because of my experience, I have been a volunteer at every United Way event I can. It’s my way of giving back, returning the care to United Way for all it has done for my family.”

The Latino Initiative is a part of United Way of Broward County’s Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention — a coalition focused on promoting mental health and preventing substance misuse across our community.
